A sum of money given to an individual, organisation or project as a gift to support its aims or proposed activity.
Grass roots
This phrase refers to activities or ideas that come from the people who will benefit or take part in them, rather than from wider agencies such as government or local authority. Community arts are often described as grassroots because they involve communities deciding what they want to do, rather than being told by somebody else.
