Aim

The main purpose of a project or group.

Applied art

A term used to describe artforms where artistic thought is applied to everyday objects or objects with a function. This would include artforms such as jewellery making, architecture and anything that is artistically designing for a purpose, such as graphic design, fashion or interior design.

Artist

An artist is someone who makes their living through creating or developing art. The term artist as used throughout this website refers to professional artists of all different disciplines and applies as much to actors, musicians, dancers and singers as it does to visual artists.

Arts, the

A term used to collectively refer to activities with creativity as the main reasoning behind them, taking place in a specific area; or as a generalised term to describe the arts and culture industry.

Arts Council England

A government funded organisation that works at a national and regional level, providing a lead on the arts through supporting, funding and advising.

Arts Practitioner

Meaning artist, an arts practitioner is someone who makes their living through practicing an artform, whether this is through leading workshops, working on commissions or producing work to sell. Arts practitioner is often used instead of artist because historically an artist was someone who worked specifically in the visual arts.

Asset

A term used to describe anything owned by or in the service of an organisation that has a value. For example: an asset could be a building or vehicle owned by a group but it could also be a volunteer with skills in a particular area that would otherwise cost money to obtain.
