Business can provide a wealth of support to community arts projects, whether through national grant giving programs from major corporations or in-kind support from local businesses.
Many larger businesses have funding schemes usually through trusts and foundations or through corporate social responsibility. Major trusts can be found through tools such as Trustfinder or Funderfinder. For other companies, research is essential and the best place to start is with a businesses’ corporate website.
Sponsorship is usually a gift of money or in-kind support in exchange for public recognition through the use of the companies name or logo.
If you are interested in gaining sponsorship from a company do lots of research and think about any ethical issues that may stop you wanting your project associated with them. For example an environmental arts project may not want to be sponsored by a company that is a known polluter.
If a business cannot provide money you may still be able to obtain in-kind support, such as used equipment, free access to services or space. A simple letter or personal call is usually sufficient to ask for in-kind support. Highlight what the business will get out of it, such as public recognition, a chance to advertise their product or services and association with a successful project.
