Glass panels, Sasha Ward, The Centre, Farnham Road, 1999

Detail of The Centre Glass

The 12 glass panels were commissioned by Slough Estates to mark the rebuilding of The Centre and celebrate its history. Sasha Ward worked with local people during 1999 to develop inspiration from Slough’s landscape, history and culture.

Originally owned by Slough Estates, The Centre provided the community with social facilities for its employees. The panels feature colours and shapes derived from the old Centre building, including the nursery, pool diving board and gates to the Trading Estate. Sasha also ran a series of glass painting workshops with local residents.

The panels run along the front of The Centre covering an area of over 25 square metres and weighing over one tonne. Each panel is hand painted. The glass panels add colour to the building during the day when light shines through the glass. At night when the building is lit the glass can be seen from the street.
