Slough Borough Council’s Parks and Allotments Section commissioned public art for a park in Britwell. The aim was to enhance the park through a project that would involve local people in the regeneration of the area. This offered people the opportunity to work with professional artists and to learn new skills as well as provide a focal point for the park.
Extensive public consultation was undertaken with over 250 local people participating. Involvement ranged from contributing initial ideas for the piece to working on the final designs for the sundial.
Local people voted for their favourite design for the sundial, which was then made out of tiny hand-cut ceramic tiles by artists Rob Turner and Gary Drostle. The tiles are cemented into a concrete base, with a brick edge and iron gnomon. There has been great appreciation of mosaic projects in Britwell, and this is one of a number of mosaic artworks. It has now become a popular meeting place.
